Advancing the skills and opportunities of young people
The Youth Media Group (YMG) is dedicated to advancing the skills and opportunities of young people in England through training, volunteering, and work experience in digital media production. Our mission is to empower individuals aged 18 and over to learn and apply valuable digital media skills in a supportive, community-focused environment.
We deliver hands-on workshops led by media professionals, covering areas such as digital photography, image editing, filming, video editing, sound recording, sound editing, web development, and social media usage. Our aim is to collaborate with community groups that can benefit from enhanced digital media to promote their services.
Our Approach
To advance the learning and skills of young people living in England through training, volunteering opportunities, and work experience in digital media production.
YMG’s "Media Support for Community Groups" project, delivered in 2022-23, significantly enhanced the digital media capabilities of disadvantaged young people and local VCFS organisations in West Yorkshire.
Through comprehensive training in Adobe Premiere Rush and Pro, 15 young volunteers acquired valuable video editing skills. Equipped with new Apple Mac Studio and Adobe Creative Cloud software, these volunteers provided digital media support to community groups, including Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic and LGBTQI+ led organisations.
The project facilitated the creation of engaging promotional videos and effective social media strategies for those organisation, resulting in outreach to over 3,000 individuals.
This initiative not only supported community groups in adapting to post-pandemic needs but also empowered young volunteers with essential digital skills, fostering community engagement and social cohesion.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Youth Media Group successfully pivoted its project "Get Active Online!" to support community well-being during lockdown. With the aid of Community Fund support, YMG partnered with Intercultural Roots for Public Health to deliver one of the first weekly online Creative Health programmes.
This initiative provided live, interactive arts and health classes to a diverse group of people confined at home due to lockdown restrictions. The project trained young volunteers to deliver digital content, producing engaging online classes that included dance, tai chi, breathwork, and mental health awareness.
By providing virtual community engagement, the project helped alleviate anxiety and depression, reaching over 3,500 participants and significantly contributing to public health and community cohesion during a critical time.
